I never go on an airplane without peering out the window and thinking of this episode! WHOSE REALITY IS REAL? “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” (1963) Season 5, Ep. I was always mesmerized by this and now in this day and age, it truly gives me the cold sweats!!! “Man’s Inhumanity to Man” is often an underlying thread, but also often Humanity, as we learned from classic characters like Ebeneezer Scrooge – magical stories that make us reflect, then hopefully make our and others’ lives better through perspective, caring more, giving more and “Passing it forward” as we move through a new age dimension of a real-world “Twilight Zone”. Perhaps more so, which certainly gives one pause. Just like any great literature, they are as relevant now, as when they first aired. With his good looks and a voice like none other, he rendered eloquent, provoking introductions, then wove fascinating stories for us to watch, letting us look within and come to our own conclusions. He didn’t need to get on a pulpit or soapbox and shout out his thoughts. Rod Serling was a brilliant pioneer in his field with a tremendous talent and heart. I’ve been a HUGE FAN for as long as I can remember. #TWILIGHT ZONE MARATHON SERIES#(Plus, the inimitable Jordan Peele took on the task of rebooting the series this year with his signature spin and that was renewed for a second season.BRING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH THE TWILIGHT ZONE! And, there iseven more distrust of the technologies that populate our lives now than was seen in episodes like “A Thing About Machines” and “The Lateness of the Hour.” The number of hate crimes might be down, according to the FBI, but hate-based violence against individuals has risen to a 16-year high. Xenophobia and bigotry (subjects of the fan favorite episode “The Monsters are Due on Maple Street,” amongst many others) are more prominent than ever as 2019 and three years of the current presidency come to a close. Who hasn’t looked at themselves in a mirror - like the titular character in “Nervous Man in a Four Dollar Room” - and wished that a more confident version of themselves would step out and take over. Existential dread and loneliness were themes throughout the whole series, and I’d argue we acknowledge those feelings far more publicly now than we did then. And even 60 years after it originally aired, the show remains relevant. ![]()
